Seismic line clearing cuts the narrow corridors that geophysical crews need to run seismic surveys for oil, gas, and mineral exploration. The lines carry the source points and receivers that let a survey image what is underground. What a seismic line is

A seismic program lays out a grid of lines across the survey area. Each line must be clear enough for equipment and people to move along it and accurate enough that the survey geometry holds. Width depends on the program: modern low-impact lines are cut as narrow as the equipment allows, a major change from the wide bulldozed lines of past decades, whose scars still mark much of the boreal.

Low-impact practice

Today's standard is to leave as little permanent footprint as possible:

  • Narrow, meandering lines that avoid mature stems where the geometry allows, rather than straight cuts through everything.
  • Hand cutting and mulching instead of blading, so the soil layer and root systems stay intact and the line regenerates.
  • Avoidance of watercourses, wet ground, and sensitive features, planned before the saws start.
  • Season selection. Winter programs on frozen ground protect soils and open access across muskeg that no machine can cross in summer.

How a program runs

  1. Layout. The survey design fixes where lines go; the clearing plan adapts each line to the ground.
  2. Line locating. Lines are flagged in the field, with avoidance features marked.
  3. Cutting. Crews cut to the specified width, by hand or with mulching equipment matched to the vegetation.
  4. Slash management. Cut material is handled to spec: mulched, scattered, or piled.
  5. Cleanup and checks. The line is confirmed against the survey spec so the geophysical crew can shoot without rework.

What drives the cost

  • Line kilometres and width. The base quantity of the job.
  • Vegetation type and density. Black spruce muskeg, alder tangle, and mature timber cut at very different rates.
  • Terrain. Slope, wet ground, and broken country slow crews and dictate equipment.
  • Season. Frozen-ground windows limit when muskeg programs can run, and compressed windows concentrate cost.
  • Access and logistics. Remote programs carry mobilization, fuel, and sometimes camp costs that dwarf the cutting itself.

How wide is a seismic line?

Why are seismic programs often run in winter?

Frozen ground carries equipment over muskeg and wet terrain that is impassable in summer, and it protects soils from rutting and disturbance. In much of northern BC and Alberta, winter is the only practical window for large programs.
